First Knowledge about IoT

IoT

IoT ( Internet of Things) is one of the most used terms recently. But people often fails to understand its actual meaning. So in this article, we are focusing on the basics of IoT.

What is IoT?

To understand IoT, we are going to create a simple scenario. Mr X has a garment industry. All of his raw materials come from Mr. Y. Before going to ultimate selling, those raw materials are passed through a lot of projects. To ensure smooth passing and proper management, Mr X combines all of the devices through sensors and technology. Now he & his associates can easily monitor every process. They can control them if it is necessary. In short, this is called IoT.

IoT is a network among items or processes connected by sensors and software and allowed to exchange information. It is the result of industry 4.0. To learn more, our readers can have a look at this animated video.

What are the opportunities?

It combines some necessary opportunities.

  • Efficiency: The whole process enables a keen monitoring system. It eventually increases production & marketing efficiency.
  • Reduction of labour cost: sensor-based tracking & auto information transferring reduce the need for human labour.
  • Improved decision making: As IoT helps to monitor whole steps from a to z, authority can make or change any decisions immediately if any problem arises.
  • Waste Reduction: Instant decision-making term helps to take steps for waste reduction.
  • Smart supply chain management: IoT sensors provide real-time data on the location, condition, and status of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Sustainability: Less waste tends to more sustainable process. That means IoT helps to create a safe environment.

What kind of challenges may IoT face?

  • Initial cost: Combining all steps through technologies costs a lot of money. The initial cost is often very high to bear.
  • Battery life: It is hard in the textile sector to manage huge power to operate IoT devices. That’s why the battery drains more often.
  • Security: Unauthorized access may create security risks.
  • Expertise: The textile sector especially in Bangladesh is popular for engaging labour from various aspects of society. But if the whole sector includes this technology, it will need an eligible & qualified workforce.

Current Scenario of using IoT in Bangladesh

Bangladesh secured a proper position in the global market. But with the revolution of Industry 4.0, it is difficult to secure the place for long. Many industries have started to adopt it, but we face huge problems due to insufficient operators. To survive, Bangladesh has to qualify its textile workforce.
